Estimates reveal low population immunity to new bird flu virus H7N9 in humans

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

The level of immunity to the recently circulating H7N9 influenza virus in an urban and rural population in Vietnam is very low, according to the first population level study to examine human immunity to the virus, which was previously only found in birds. The findings have implications for planning the public health response to this pandemic threat.

The study used a new, high throughput method that allows blood samples to be analysed for antibodies to multiple human and animal influenza viruses at the same time and is easier to standardise than previous techniques. However, the assay is yet to be validated clinically for the H7N9 virus, and the researchers caution that the results must be interpreted with care.

Since the first case of H7N9 infection in humans was reported in February 2013, there have been 131 confirmed cases and 36 deaths, all in China apart from one case in Taiwan. All of the infections seem to have come from infected poultry and there is no evidence of sustained transmission between people. One of the first key pieces of information that officials need when considering how best to respond to the threat of a pandemic is how much, if any, immunity the human population has to this virus. This helps to predict where the virus is likely to affect first and how likely it is that the virus will spread further. Having this knowledge also helps to understand the risks of severe infection, as well as helping to target protective measures such as where to direct antiviral medication.

Researchers at the Wellcome Trust Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) in Vietnam tested 1723 blood samples collected in southern Vietnam for the presence of antibodies to five different bird flu viruses, including one from the H7 sub type. The presence of antibodies would be an indication of past exposure to these particular strains of flu. They used a new technique that was developed by their research collaborators at the National Institute of Public Health of The Netherlands that is faster and easier to use than previous methods.

The results reveal that although the level of antibodies to the H7 sub-type of flu virus are higher than any of the H5 sub-types tested, levels of antibodies to all five bird flu viruses are much lower than to human flu viruses. This suggests that people living in this particular area of Vietnam have had very little or no exposure to the H7 sub-type of virus, similar to other bird flu viruses. As this population of people would be expected to be among the first to be affected in the event of a pandemic, these findings have important implications for pandemic preparedness plans in this area.

Dr Maciej Boni, a Sir Henry Dale Fellow at the OUCRU and first author of the study, explains: "H7N9 is a virus that until now has only infected birds so it's not surprising that we don't find much evidence of humans having been exposed to it. It is reassuring that in Vietnam we don't see any evidence that the current outbreaks represent a tip-of-the iceberg observation of widespread H7N9 infection in people. On the other hand, the low antibody levels indicate that there is likely to be very little immunity to this virus."

Around half of the samples were taken from an urban environment, Ho Chi Minh City, and half from a rural area, the nearby Khanh Hoa province. The team found no difference in the level of immunity to bird flu viruses between these two populations, even though people living in rural areas are more likely to live in close proximity to poultry.

"It has been suggested that people who live in closer proximity to chickens and other birds will have higher levels of immunity to bird flu viruses simply because their exposure is likely to be greater. However we find no evidence for this. Our findings would suggest that both rural and urban populations should be treated the same when considering how best to respond to the threat of an outbreak," added Dr Boni.

Professor Jeremy Farrar, Director of the Wellcome Trust Major Overseas Programme in Vietnam and the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit Hospital for Tropical Diseases, explains: "This is the first study to give us information about the level of antibodies and potentially human immunity to this new bird flu virus, H7N9 in the region. But we need to interpret the findings cautiously, these assays are relatively new and we need to understand how they correspond to existing assays and how they reflect past infection and true human immunity.

"We know that antibodies are very important for immunity to other flu viruses but at this stage, we still don't know what level of antibody measured using this assay would provide protection against this novel strain. Further studies will be needed to understand the clinical relevance of these new assays, how they compare with classic techniques and what the apparent absence of antibodies to these viruses in the human population means. However these new techniques do allow for much higher throughput of samples, ease of use and once validated may allow much more rapid assessment of the spread of infection and levels of population immunity than do traditional assays."

The study, which was carried out in collaboration with scientists at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in the Netherlands, is published online this week in the Journal of Infectious Diseases.

Professor Marion Koopmans, who is Head of Virology at the RIVM and senior author of the study, said: "We developed this technique exactly to be used in the current situation: we wanted a standardised test that allowed us to rapidly compare antibodies to the new virus with those to influenza viruses that we already know are common in people. The level of immunity to a new virus is one of the important questions during any emerging disease outbreak. We need only one drop of blood, so that tests can also be run when only small sample volumes are available, for instance when testing children. For outbreak investigations, testing of animals may be needed, and we are currently working on that. To do the clinical validation studies, we need blood samples from patients (and animals) with confirmed H7N9, and we hope to be able to do that soon through collaborations with other groups working on H7N9."

Opera for Android out of beta, available on the Play store now

If your ears perked up when you heard about Opera for Android going WebKit, but were holding out for the final, non-beta version, then that wait is over. More recent features of the browser include the option to toggle the nav-bar location, text-wrapping when zooming and a full screen view of active tabs, but beyond that, the "what's new" section on the download page isn't saying much. So, while it's mostly the Opera we saw back at MWC, tools such as off-road mode (for data compressing) and a discovery mode are finally set for primetime. Ready to let Opera take the stage on your Android? Get your tickets at the source.

IRS official Lerner refuses to testify before Congress

Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner, who leads the exempt organizations division under scrutiny for targeting conservative groups that applied for tax-exempt status, is refusing to testify before Congress, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Lerner was supposed to appear before the House Oversight Committee Wednesday.

The Times reports that Lerner's attorney, William W. Taylor III, sent a letter to the committee chairman saying she would plead the Fifth:

?She has not committed any crime or made any misrepresentation but under the circumstances she has no choice but to take this course,? said a letter by Taylor to committee Chairman Darrell Issa. ... The letter, sent Monday, was obtained Tuesday by the Los Angeles Times.

Issa, a California Republican, has issued a subpoena, compelling her presence at Wednesday's hearing.

NATO troops begin withdrawal of equipment from Afghanistan

Afghanistan Sun (ANI) Wednesday 22nd May, 2013

The NATO and US troops have started withdrawal of their equipment from Afghanistan after more than ten years of war.

The US and its allies invaded Afghanistan to oust Taliban government in the aftermath of tragic incident of September 11, 2001. They are set to withdraw all their forces by the end of 2014, reports The Express Tribune.

Pakistan is a key transit route for the NATO mission in landlocked Afghanistan, from where it is driven to the border from the Arabian Sea port of Karachi.

Sources in frontier corps said that 50 trucks and armoured vehicles reached Balochistan's capital Quetta from Kandahar, the Taliban's previous spiritual headquarter amid strict security measures, on Tuesday evening.

They said levies and FC personnel guard the NATO convoy from Pak-Afghan border to Quetta. The convoy would leave for Port Qasim Karachi on Wednesday.

Sources said security in and around Chaman, Pakistan's bordering town with Afghanistan was tightened following shifting of equipments.

Police close Susan Powell case, reveal new details

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) ? For the first time, Utah police said Monday they believe Susan Powell's brother-in-law was "heavily involved" in getting rid of her body, even as they announced they couldn't solve the sensational case of a mother's disappearance after a nearly 3 ?-year investigation.

West Valley police said the focus shifted to Michael C. Powell after Josh Powell killed the couple's two boys and himself in a deliberately set house fire 15 months ago.

Police announced Monday they were closing the investigation of Susan Powell's disappearance, citing a lack of leads coupled with Michael C. Powell's suicide months ago. They also released the case file, which shows Josh Powell had an affair with a woman he met through a dating service.

The file includes other details, and contained emails from Susan Powell's father, Chuck Cox, who expressed hope his daughter might be found in the days after her December 2009 disappearance.

Cox believed Josh Powell poisoned his wife's pancakes before she was taken from the couple's house.

"The question is, where did he put her and will we find her before she does die?" Cox wrote in an email to Utah authorities, according to the police file. "One possibility is that she is still alive, but we need to find her before she does die, if the poison was not a fatal dose, she may ... be found."

The police file contains tens of thousands of pages of documents, photographs and video, and interview notes and voice mail messages.

In one file, police revealed they interviewed a West Valley City woman who said she made contact with Josh Powell on the dating service Live Links six or seven months before Susan disappeared. The woman, identified only as Kourtney in police files, said she knew Powell by the name John Staley, and didn't know he was married.

The woman said Powell gave her $800 over the course of their relationship ? for reasons that weren't detailed in police reports ? and that she only discerned his real identity after news broke of Susan's disappearance. The woman was interviewed by police in August 2010.

Police said they based their suspicion of Michael C. Powell's involvement partly on a car he left at an Oregon junkyard only weeks after Susan Powell disappeared. The junkyard is about 200 miles from a forest outside Salem, Ore., where authorities searched last week, looking for a body. The search turned up nothing, and police said they ran out of clues.

Deputy West Valley Police Chief Mike Powell ? no relation ? said authorities believe Josh Powell killed his wife, and that his brother later got involved in a cover-up. Michael C. Powell denied any wrongdoing while under investigation.

It wasn't until last August that Utah police discovered Michael Powell's Ford Taurus at the junkyard outside Pendleton, Ore. DNA recovered from the upholstery inside the car's trunk proved inconclusive, they said.

The Powell brothers used sophisticated computer encryption to communicate, according to West Valley City Deputy Chief Phil Quinlan. Investigators have been unable to decipher that encrypted communication, he said.

Investigators said they focused on the brother last year, when Josh Powell changed his insurance policy to list Michael Powell as a primary beneficiary, rather than his wife or children.

Michael Powell, an ardent supporter of Josh Powell, killed himself Feb. 11 by leaping from a parking garage in Minneapolis. He was interviewed numerous times last year after investigators determined he had sold his car for salvage value ? a discovery that came nearly two years after Susan Powell's disappearance. Officials said he offered evasive answers about why he got rid of the car and how he had used it in the weeks after her disappearance.

His suicide left investigators without any person of interest in the case. While authorities believe the brothers were responsible for Susan Powell's disappearance, they said repeatedly Monday that they never had enough evidence to bring charges.

"This is a circumstantial case, yes," Quinlan said. His fellow deputy chief, Mike Powell, added, "We didn't have a body. We don't have a crime scene."

Susan Powell was reported missing more than three years ago after failing to show up for work. Her husband, Josh, maintained his innocence and said he had taken the couple's young boys on a midnight camping trip in freezing temperatures the night she was last seen.

Josh Powell eventually returned to the couple's hometown of Puyallup, Wash., where he got caught up in a battle with Susan Powell's parents for custody of the boys, 7-year-old Charlie and 5-year-old Braden.

On Feb. 15, 2012, he locked a social worker out of a rental home at the start of a supervised visit, attacked the boys with a hatchet and set the house afire. All three were killed in the blaze.

Days earlier, a court had ordered Josh Powell to undergo an intensive psychosexual evaluation in the custody dispute.

Josh Powell was never charged in his wife's disappearance, but unsealed documents say authorities found drops of Susan Powell's blood on a floor next to a sofa that appeared to have been recently cleaned, with two fans set up to blow on it.

Investigators also found life insurance policies on Susan Powell and determined that Josh Powell had filed paperwork to withdraw her retirement account money about 10 days after her disappearance.

"We have searched high and low for what happened to Susan Cox Powell," West Valley Mayor Mike Winder said. "What happened to Susan that night?"

Democratic Senate finance committee chair: 'IRS abandoned good ...

The political appointee who headed the IRS during the US tax agency?s abusive treatment of conservative groups insisted on Tuesday that he was not involved in the scandal.

US senators grilled retired IRS boss Douglas Shulman about what he readily acknowledged was ?inexcusable? behavior by agents who, from 2011, singled out right-leaning groups for excessive scrutiny.

The IRS actions have become one of a series of alleged abuses of executive power that have cast a shadow over President Barack Obama?s second term, and Tuesday?s hearing was not the first into the case.

Last week, House lawmakers questioned outgoing IRS chief Steven Miller, who Obama had forced to resign in the wake of the revelations.

?I was dismayed and I was saddened to read the inspector general?s conclusions that actions had been taken creating the appearance that the IRS was not acting as it should have,? Shulman told the Senate finance committee.

?The actions outlined in that report have justifiably led to questions about the fairness of the approach taken here.?

Shulman, who retired from the IRS in November, described a vast agency tasked with overseeing tax-exempt groups and carefully scrutinizing those applying for such non-profit status.

But, while he said the targeting occurred between 2010 and June 2011, he insisted that ?in June of 2011 I was not aware of this.?

The Finance Committee chairman, Democrat Max Baucus, blasted the IRS and accused Shulman and Miller of essentially being asleep at the switch.

?The IRS abandoned good judgment and lost the public?s trust,? Baucus said.

Top committee Republican Orrin Hatch insisted there was ?more than a hint of political bias? by IRS agents who put conservative groups with words like ?Tea Party? or ?Patriot? in their names under burdensome review.

But Hatch expressed frustration with the IRS officials? refusal to say who knew about the centralizing of the groups in its early stages, and how far up the chain of command it went.

?One way or another, we?re going to learn the facts about what went on here,? Hatch said.

Obama has said he knew nothing about the abuse until the internal IRS report leaked this month.

The White House acknowledged Monday it was told in April that an inspector general was finalizing an audit into Internal Revenue Service abuses, but stressed that Obama aides made no attempt to intervene or influence findings.

Attention turned to portions of tax law that delineate non-profit status, and discrepancies between the federal statute and the IRS regulations in determining what are known as ?501(c)(4) organizations.?

Such groups, which are not required to reveal their donors, spent millions of dollars to political activity in 2012, with some critics saying they played outsized roles in shaping the presidential campaign.

Baucus noted that under a decades-old federal statute, such groups must ?exclusively? be engaged in social welfare or community good, while the IRS regulations say the groups must be only ?primarily? engaged in social welfare.

?Clearly a Mack truck is being driven through a 501(c)(4) loophole,? Baucus said, arguing that once the immediate scandal clears the law itself should be reformed to make it clearer which groups should qualify.

UFC on FX 8?s Three Stars: Vitor Belfort, Ronaldo Souza and Fabio Maldonado

Who stood out in Saturday night's fights?

No. 1 star -- Vitor Belfort*: We will be watching highlights of that knockout for years to come. The timing, explosion and landing spot of the kick were just perfect. The knockout was so great the UFC didn't even have to say who they were talking about when they announced who the $50,000 Knockout of the Night bonus was awarded to.

Then why the asterisk? Because it's hard to look at what Belfort did and not wonder if the testosterone replacement therapy he used throughout his camp played a part. His late-career resurgence doesn't pass the smell test.

No. 2 star -- Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza: Did Chris Camozzi even realize he was in the arm triangle choke that Souza so expertly applied? Souza's performance on Saturday night served notice to the UFC middleweights. It also earned him a $50,000 Submission of the Night bonus. All in all, it was a pretty good start in the UFC for the Strikeforce veteran.

No. 3 star -- Fabio Maldonado: Perhaps it wasn't the prettiest win of the night, but it got the job done against some tough odds. Maldonado withstood a kick to the groin that made even me wince and came back to win by decision. That's more than enough to earn a star.

Who stood out for you? Speak up on Facebook or Twitter.

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Manti Te'o isn't hiding out. He's just not talking to the media.

After being spotted attending a party thrown by the magazine Maxim last week in Hollywood, Te'o was back in San Diego at the Chargers second open session of organized team activities on Monday.

For the second straight week, the former Notre Dame linebacker was barred from speaking with reporters.

Maxim confirmed that Te'o attended a party after the magazine included his fake girlfriend on its list of the world's 100 hottest women.

The Chargers apparently are trying to put the fake girlfriend episode behind by keeping Te'o off-limits to the media until minicamp in mid-June. Te'o's attending the party seemed to refresh in people's minds how the Heisman Trophy runner-up was caught in an elaborate hoax. The magazine put Te'o's fake girlfriend at No. 69 on its list, running a picture of an "invisible" girl in a bikini superimposed over an ocean scene.

Te'o posed with several women at the Maxim party, including models Kendra Wilkinson and Courtney Caldwell, and beach volleyball player Jess Gysin.

Rookie head coach Mike McCoy said he didn't know Te'o went to the Maxim bash.

"He's going to make certain decisions. We'll keep that in-house with what we think and what we're doing with that," the coach said.

Te'o was drafted by the Chargers in the second round.

He dropped out of the first round in part because of his poor performance in Notre Dame's blowout loss to Alabama in the national championship game. The fake girlfriend hoax that was revealed in January and became a national sensation didn't help, either.

The Chargers, who are trying to rebuild under a new regime after missing the playoffs three straight seasons, have taken unprecedented steps to limit Te'o's time in front of the microphones. The team refused to let reporters do customary one-on-ones with him after his introductory news conference during the draft, and has continued to refuse to set up one-on-one interviews with the linebacker.

Te'o did speak after the first practice of rookie minicamp on May 10 but has been the only player off-limits during OTAs, which are practices in helmets, jerseys and shorts.

Some reporters do have football-related questions for Te'o.

"We have a plan like we have for everything else," McCoy said. "He's here. He's a young player. The organization has a schedule for him like we do every other player of putting him in front of the media. We'll do it accordingly.

"He's doing a nice job and he'll be in front of you when we put him out here."

McCoy was Denver's offensive coordinator when Tim Tebow was with the Broncos.

The Broncos never kept Tebow off-limits to the media.

One Chargers rookie who did talk was former California wide receiver Keenan Allen, who said he didn't think posting a photo of himself online wearing an Oakland Raiders cap would cause the stir it did.

"Obviously I had a Raiders hat on. I didn't think it would have the effect that it did have but obviously it did and I didn't mean for it to happen," Allen said sheepishly about getting caught wearing gear from the Chargers' most-hated rival. "I wasn't thinking about it at the time. I wasn't actually thinking about football at all. I was just going to grab a bite to eat. I posted something on Vine.

"I'm sorry about it and it won't happen again." Allen said he bought the hat while in college.

He posted the picture sometime after being drafted by the Chargers.

He also said veteran safety Eric Weddle "came up to me today and gave me the rundown ? don't do it again."

Outside linebacker Dwight Freeney, who agreed to a two-year deal with the Chargers on Saturday, wasn't at Monday's workout. McCoy said Freeney had a prior commitment.

The first Jolla phone: 4.5-inch display, Android app compliant, 399 euros

The first Jolla phone 45inch display, Android app compliant, 399 euros

Jolla's heavily teased launch day in Finland has already spilled some major news: pricing and specs for the first Sailfish OS handset. The phone seems to be called "The Other Half" -- or at least that's the working title for now -- and judging from Jolla's Facebook page it consists of a colorful plastic case, available in various shades including orange or green, which hooks onto the main chassis containing a 4.5-inch display (of unknown resolution), dual-core processor, microSD expansion with 16GB onboard, a "4G" modem, user replaceable battery and an 8MP rear camera. The chassis recognizes which case is attached and adapts the visual theme of the OS to match, creating "your other half, exactly as you want it to be."

Perhaps more usefully, the Sailfish operating system will also be Android app compliant out of the box, and we're currently on the ground in Helsinki trying to discover exactly how developers and users will be able to put that feature to work (while also chasing down the rest of the specs). Meanwhile, there's an emphatic video message from Jolla co-founder Marc Dillon after the break, seeking the world's assistance in taking the heritage of MeeGo into a new era.

Update: We now hear that the phone will simply be called the "Jolla."

Update #2: Jolla has just clarified that 4G means LTE. The display resolution has been vaguely described as "HD," which to our minds suggests 720p. Furthermore, it sounds like the way the "other half" interfaces with the main body of the device allows for much deeper functionality beyond just personalization. We've just added our own video tour with more information.

[Thanks, Toni]

#include <stdio.h> #include <string.h> #include <stdlib.h>  int main(void) {      char *strstr();     char sentence[80];     char search[80];     printf( "Enter a line of text: \n");     fgets(sentence, 80, stdin);     printf("Enter your search query: \n");     fgets(search, 80, stdin);     char *searchPtr;     searchPtr = strstr(sentence, search);     printf("%s\n", searchPtr); }

    my output for -

    Enter a line of text:
    love love hotdogs /*sentence*/
    Enter your search query:
    love /*search*/
    (null)/*searchPtr*/

    but if I do this

    Enter a line of text:
    love/*sentence*/
    Enter your search query:
    love/*search*/
    love/*searchPtr*/

obviously strstr is only pointing to the first 'string' in my array, or is only comparing my 2 strings to see if they are exact, but I am not sure why! This program is suppose to use the strstr function to point to a certain area of the sentence, and only read from that part of the sentence on. But it's hard when I can't get my pointer to point to anything!

-Thanks, this may come down to my lack of understand of pointers, but god am I trying to get it!

Please explain what you intend by the following snippet:

    char *strstr();

Why are you trying to redefine a standard function?

Next part of your problem is probably the new line character that is at the end of your strings. Remember that fgets() extracts the end of line character and places it into the string.

Toots Hibbert injured by bottle thrown at concert

Toots Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals.

A Richmond, Va. area man was charged on Sunday with aggravated assault and public intoxication after throwing a bottle at reggae singer Frederick "Toots" Hibbert during a concert Saturday, reported The Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Toots, who fronts Toots and the Maytals, were performing at the Dominion Riverrock Outdoor Sports and Music Festival when William C. Lewis, 19, reportedly threw a glass vodka bottle from the crowd. The set ended early.

"I was on stage at the sound monitor desk when a clear glass liquor bottle struck Toots Hibbert in the head," said John O'Donnell, who works for Soundworks, which co-produced the event. "Blood was flowing heavily from his head."

A guitarist told the crowd that Hibbert was "going to the hospital with a busted head."

Workers discovered that a vodka bottle had disappeared from a bar, said Jack Berry, executive director of Venture Richmond, which co-produced the event.

Hibbert, 67, was treated at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, then released early on Sunday morning, and appears to hold no grudge against the area, according to festival manager Stephen Lecky.

"He was in good spirits and was very appreciative of Richmond," he said. "He said he wanted to come back, and he understood this was just one bad apple, basically."

Added Lecky, "He was one of the nicest men I ever met."

The band's Facebook page featured a post late on Sunday which read: "Toots would like to thank all his friends, fans and family who have reached out to him since the bottle throwing incident in Richmond Saturday Night. After 7 seven stitches and a little rest he was able to perform a wonderful show in Westhampton NY tonite as the 1st show of his acoustic tour. The youth who threw the bottle for no apparent reason is in custody and being charged. Being the soldier he is he will hopefully be able to continue the tour."

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Indiana spent the entire season perfecting its defense.

On Saturday, it produced the biggest payoff for the Pacers in nearly a decade.

Roy Hibbert's block of Carmelo Anthony's dunk attempt midway through the fourth quarter spurred an 11-2 run that rallied the Pacers to a 106-99 victory in Game 6 of their second-round series, sending them into their first Eastern Conference final since 2004.

New York native Lance Stephenson scored nine points in the run, finishing with a playoff career-high 25.

"That's why they pay me the big bucks this summer, so I have to protect the paint," said Hibbert, who signed a $58 million contract last summer. "If all else fails, meaning the offense, I have to protect the paint."

With players from both teams standing on the court as the final seconds ticked off and Pacers fans roaring in appreciation, the sellout crowd wasted little time breaking into chants of "Beat The Heat!"

For Indiana, it sets up a postseason rematch with the defending NBA champs, the team that eliminated them last May after the Pacers had taken a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven semifinals. The Heat wound up winning Game 4 at Indiana and followed that with two more wins as Danny Granger struggled with a knee injury.

Indiana used the lessons from that series as motivation to improve this season and wound up beating the Heat twice at home before losing the third game of the season series at Miami. The Pacers will return to South Florida for Game 1 on Wednesday night.

With Granger missing all but five games this season because of the lingering knee injury, the Pacers put an even greater emphasis on playing defense and it showed.

Indiana led the league in rebounding, defensive field goal percentage and defensive 3-point percentage while finishing second in points allowed per game during the regular season. It was no different in the playoffs, as the Knicks found out.

New York had another subpar shooting night Saturday, making just 40 percent of its shots, and again wound up on the wrong side of a 43-36 rebounding discrepancy. In the paint, New York was outscored 52-20, and Anthony, who finished with 39 points, scored just four points in the final 12 minutes when he went 2 of 7 from the field.

Iman Shumpert added 19 points, hitting five 3-pointers, and J.R. Smith scored 15. Nobody else was in double figures.

The combination, as it had been in the previous three losses to Indiana, produced the same frustrating result.

"They have a hell of a defense. They hold down the paint. They do a great job, do a hell of a job of controlling the paint, closing it down, making it tough for guys," Anthony said. "You've got to give them guys credit, especially when they got a chance to set. Roy Hibbert gets to sit in the paint, causes havoc."

    It's not just that.

The biggest question coming into Saturday's game was whether starting point guard George Hill would play. He took part in the team's morning shootaround, was cleared by the team doctors and wound up returning two days after missing Game 5 with a concussion. His return gave the Pacers a big boost.

Hill finished with just 12 points on 2-of-10 shooting but had five rebounds and four assists, and kept the Pacers composed enough to commit only nine turnovers ? 10 fewer than Thursday night's loss in New York.

The results showed up everywhere on the floor.

Paul George had 23 points, five rebounds and four assists. David West added 17 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Hibbert finished with 21 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks, none bigger than the stuff on Anthony that changed the game. Stephenson had 10 rebounds and three assists in his best postseason game ever.

The reason: He wanted to avoid a trip home.

"I just didn't want to go back to New York and play Game 7," Stephenson said. "Just get it done with now and I'd do whatever it takes to do that today. It showed tonight."

The New York native made sure of it.

After George grabbed the rebound off of Hibbert's block, Stephenson took a pass from West and scored on a layup to tie the score at 92 with 4:51 left in the game. Stephenson followed that with a steal and drove in for a layup, drawing a foul and completing a three-point play. After grabbing another rebound and making two more free throws, West tipped in a miss and Stephenson closed the decisive spurt with another layup. Suddenly, the Pacers led 101-94 with 1:53 to go.

New York never got another chance to tie the score or take the lead again despite making a far more typical 13 of 30 from 3-point range.

"It's tough to go out this way," coach Mike Woodson said. "I didn't make it happen for us and that's what's disappointing."

The Pacers have a far different goal now as they get ready to face LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Miami.

"We're not satisfied with where we're at," coach Frank Vogel said. "We feel like there's no ceiling on this team this year."

Notes: New York failed to become the ninth team to rally from a 3-1 deficit. ... Indianapolis 500 pole winner Ed Carpenter made the short trip from the track to Bankers Life Fieldhouse, where he is a regular attendee. ... Colts coach Chuck Pagano also attended the game. ... The Knicks were 18 of 18 from the free throw line.

Netanyahu takes aim at weapons 'leakage' in Syria

    By Jeffrey Heller

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held out the prospect on Sunday of further Israeli strikes inside Syria, pledging to act to prevent advanced weapons from reaching Hezbollah and other militant groups.

Although Israel has not publicly taken sides in the civil war between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and rebels trying to topple him, Western and Israeli sources say it has launched air strikes in Syria to destroy weapons it believed were destined for Lebanon's Hezbollah.

In public remarks at the weekly meeting of his cabinet, Netanyahu made no direct mention of those attacks, but made clear Israel was prepared to take action in the future and said it was "preparing for every scenario" in the Syrian conflict.

Israel had set a policy "to prevent, as much as possible, the leakage of advanced weapons to Hezbollah and terror elements", he said.

"We will act to ensure the security interest of Israel's citizens in the future as well," Netanyahu added, describing his government's actions as "responsible, determined and level-headed".

Israel has neither confirmed nor denied reports it attacked Iranian-supplied missiles stored near Damascus this month that it believed were awaiting delivery to Hezbollah, which fought a war with Israel in 2006 and is allied with Assad.

    SUPERSONIC MISSILE

A Russian shipment of Yakhont anti-ship missiles to Syria was condemned by the United States on Friday, and Israel is also alarmed by the prospect of Moscow supplying S-300 advanced air defense missile systems to Damascus.

Netanyahu held talks in Russia on Tuesday with President Vladimir Putin on the Syrian crisis but gave no public indication whether Israel's concerns over the Russian weaponry had been eased.

Amos Gilad, a senior Israeli Defence Ministry official, said on Saturday the S-300 and the Yakhont, weapons that could complicate any plans for foreign military intervention in Syria, would likely end up with Hezbollah and threaten both Israel and U.S. forces in the Gulf.

"Yakhont is a cruise missile that can hit targets at sea and strategic targets. (It is) a supersonic missile, (with) a range of 300 km, very sophisticated," Gilad said on Israel's Channel Two television on Saturday.

"The Russians sent it to Syria, beside the strategic defense system called the S-300. There are a number of versions, and they are sending them one of the good versions," he said.

General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Friday Russia's delivery of anti-ship missiles to Assad was "ill-timed and very unfortunate" and risked prolonging a war that has already killed more than 80,000 Syrians.

A spokesman for Putin, while not responding directly to assertions Russia had sent the anti-ship missiles, said Moscow would honor contracts to supply Syria, a long-time weapons customer.

The World's Fastest Wi-Fi Puts Your Sluggish Router to Shame

For the most part, we're all happy if we can get Internet that's fast enough to stream some HD video. But faster is always better, and a new, world-record setting network developed in Germany is so blazing fast you wouldn't know what to do with it. It can deliver multiple HD films in a second.

Developed by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, the new 40Gbps Wi-Fi (40x faster than Google Fiber) not only managed to nail crazy speeds, but also did it over a distance of .6 miles. The catch is that it'd never work well in your house.

The jump in speed and distance is not only thanks to state-of-the-art hardware, but a higher frequency (240GHz) than your typical Wi-Fi setup uses (2.4GHz or 5 GHz). This space seems to be a sweet spot for non-interference, letting signals dash across the air pretty easily, but a frequency so high would be very very easily thwarted by the common wall. And here in the States, the FCC might have something to say about it.

The network was tested by beaming data from the top of one skyscraper to another, and chances are this kind of "invisible fiber" connection would be its biggest application, as opposed to your home Wi-Fi. Still, it could be super useful for 'net distribution in rural area's where fiber's an expensive proposition with little pay off. Now if only they could roll out this tech as fast as it can transfer data. [Karlsruhe Institute of Technology via Discovery]
