Intel details 14 dual-core Ivy Bridge processors ahead of Computex

Intel announced its quad-core Ivy Bridge processors in April, but we've known that dual-core CPUs must be on the way too. And alas, the chip maker does have some up its sleeve -- 14, to be exact. Core i5 and Core i7 versions will be the first to ship, with Core i3 processors launching later this year along with new Pentiums and Celerons. Of the 14 dual-core processors, six are desktop-grade. The rest are mobile, though four are ultra-low voltage (which will be denoted by a U at the end of their name). Computex is just around the corner, and we expect to see plenty of Ivy Bridge systems -- especially Ultrabooks with ultra-low voltage CPUs -- there next week. In the meantime, we've already reviewed the Lenovo ThinkPad x230, a system running a dual-core 2.6GHz Core i5 Ivy Bridge processor. If you're into the nitty-gritty details, you'll find plenty to love in the Intel slides below the break.

Bargain Hunter's Guide to Affordable Car Insurance Policies

In, driving around the state without having obtained the prescribed car insurance is illegal and thus punishable by law. Such is the usual case not only in several states in the US, but in some other countries as well where elaborate transportation laws apply. While there may be drivers who view insurance policies as a whim of bureaucracy, it is worth noting that auto insurance policies have actually helped save thousands of people by cushioning the impact of road accidents on their finances. Hence, mandated or not, some drivers still choose to invest in this security.

The only logical reason why there are vehicle owners who never get their cars insured is that insurance policies today are mostly expensive. Much as they wanted to be financially secured when the dreaded road mishaps occur, it is the cost of availing the coverage that makes it difficult for them to consider having car insurance. However, what many people don?t know is that they can lower the prices of their preferred coverage if they choose to do so. Here is list of practical tips on how you can save on car insurance policies:

Minimize Risk ? This strategy actually falls under the category of self-insuring since the idea is to lower the insurance quote as much as one can afford. Through minimizing the odds of danger in your part and proving the insurers that you can very well handle your car on the road, the actuaries can give you reasonably priced premiums.
One way to lower the risk of getting into car accidents is to become a responsible driver. Always remember that every speeding ticket is a point against your insurance quote; it will reflect badly on your record and insurers may take you for a high-risk driver. In, they have this compulsory ?no-fault insurance system? which orders the insurers to pay for the damages to properties and injuries incurred regardless of whether the holders of auto insurance policies are responsible for the accident or not. The catch is that the drivers will never be paid for the damages to their own vehicles in the event of theft or a collision. This is why vehicle owners are often advised to take defensive driving lessons and precautionary measures to protect their cars if they do not wish to avail of a comprehensive insurance.

Do Comparative Shopping ? You don?t need to scour the local agencies in your area and do all the stressful footwork just to find a desirable insurance quote. All you have to do is search the web for online insurance providers and check the kinds of coverage that they offer. After studying each policy and weighing up your options, you can now choose which coverage is best for you, budget-wise.

Choose Your Car Wisely ? If it is your first time to drive a car, you should also consider the cost of insurance that your desired car is likely to be quoted. For drivers who want to add special coverage to their existing car insurance, it is best to insure the vehicles which are unlikely to figure in accidents.

Illegal body cavity searches alleged in Milwaukee

By Elizabeth Chuck, msnbc.com

Seven officers and a supervisor at the Milwaukee police department have had?their badges taken away?after allegations surfaced?that police have been conducting body cavity searches on suspects with no?authority to do so.

Reports of officers arresting suspects then subjecting them to cavity searches first surfaced in local media in March. On Monday, after getting access to a police report, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that officers allegedly performed these searches on a routine basis.

One Milwaukee officer, Michael Vagnini, "had a reputation" for forcing suspects he believed had drugs in their body cavities to bend over for him, said defense attorney Alex Cossi, who handled a July 2011 case that alleges Vagnini searched his client and another suspect in the booking room.

"This was not a rogue happenstance. This was a tacit acceptance of strip searches without proper procedures or supervision," Cossi told The Journal Sentinel.

Vagnini found suspected cocaine "between (their) butt cheeks," the police report said.

Strip searches, which Wisconsin state law defines as searching "a detained person's genitals, pubic area, buttock or anus, or a detained female person's breast," can only be performed by a doctor, physician's assistant or registered nurse. The state law requires written permission before a strip search is conducted, unless there's probable cause to believe the suspect is hiding a weapon.

Cossi said his client was not provided with written documents before Vagnini performed the cavity search, which is a strip search involving penetration,?on him. Because?improper tactics were used to find the cocaine, the drug dealing charge against Cossi's client was thrown out, The Journal Sentinel reported.

It's not clear how many allegations of cavity searches the Police Department is facing.?

"A number of people came forward so that we have many more complaints than we certainly started out with," Milwaukee police Chief Edward?Flynn said at a news conference Wednesday on April 11. "Of those complaints, I'd say a significant majority of them are of a very similar nature, which indicates that we have more people to talk to than we initially had."

An improper strip search carries a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000, according to Wisconsin law.

Vagnini, six other officers and a supervisor, Sgt. Jason Mucha,?have had their badges and guns taken away while the department investigates the claims.

In March, an alleged victim came forward to speak to NBC's TMJ-4 to talk about his claim, which he said?happened when he was only 15.

'They slammed me on the ground'
Kevin Freeman Jr. told TMJ-4 he and his friends were violated during a traffic stop in December.

"When they searched me they eased their hands right between my butt.??I tried to reach back and soon as I tried to reach back to stop them, they slammed me on the ground," Freeman said.??

It's illegal to conduct a body cavity search outside, where people other than the one conducting the search could see it taking place.

Milwaukee police spokeswoman Anne Schwartz told msnbc.com she could not comment on the matter since it was a pending investigation. Police chief Edward Flynn said in a news conference in March the cavity search complaints go back a couple of years. The department's internal investigation will determine whether searches violated department policy, state law, or both, The Journal Sentinel said.

Improperly conducted body searches can be construed under Wisconsin law as sexual assaults because of their invasive nature. It's not clear how much penetration allegedly occurred during the searches.

John Birdsall, a Milwaukee defense attorney, said that if the claims are true, police are abusing their authority.

"One thing is clear, if they're doing rectal searches in the field, that's just illegal," he told the Journal Sentinel. "Clothes or no clothes, you can't do a body cavity search. They don't have the authority to do that."

Milwaukee County prosecutors have launched a John Doe investigation, in which prosecutors can subpoena documents without public knowledge. The FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office are monitoring the investigation, The Journal Sentinel reported, and could launch an investigation.

Raising Retirement: The intergenerational theft of baby boomers

Bryce Edwards puts together a devastating critique of how those bloody baby boomers have robbed the public services they are now demanding we pay as their charmed existence continues into their dear bloody golden retirement...

If you were born in the 1950s you would have grown up as New Zealand's economy boomed, with almost zero unemployment. If your family couldn't afford a decent private rental there were literally entire suburbs of state houses built and available at low rent. These were not the multi-story blocks that later tenants had to endure, but roomy, well-built (and now much sought after) houses with quarter acre sections. If you wanted to own your own house but didn't have the deposit then your universal family benefit could be capitalised and there were subsidised housing corporation loans to make sure the mortgage payment weren't too onerous. Most health and education services were, for all intents and purposes, free. School donations were actually donations - not invoiced with threats of exclusion if not paid. Tertiary education required almost no fees and living allowances were easily accessible, along with plentiful holiday employment.

Of course the top marginal tax rate was 66% in order to pay for all these benefits. But in the late 80s, just as middle class baby boomers entered their high earning years, the top tax rate was halved. That meant the next generation had to start paying and borrowing for their education, along with market rentals for state house tenants and numerous other user-pays charges.

A new generation of graduates already saddled with mortgage sized debt wasn't really a problem. They were told the need to own your own home was irrational and there were plenty of houses they could rent from the well-off baby boomers, who were furiously investing their surplus income in property, claiming deductions but still free of any tax on their substantial capital gains. House prices rocketed - which was great for growing untaxed wealth, but was a disaster for families trying to buy their first home.

Baby boomers who joined Kiwsaver early will have received the highest proportion of Government subsidy for their savings - the state's generosity is already being ratcheted down. Kiwisaver funds will be the icing on the cake for baby boomers,

...Gen Xers and Gen Y should be foaming at the bloody mouth over hoe we as a generation have been screwed by these greedy buggers, and now we have to raise the retirement entitlements as well???

I am sick of hearing that the retirement age has to raise! If Muldoon hadn't deceived the nation and if the Cullen fund hadn't been gutted, we wouldn't have the looming retirement cost issues we currently face. ?Thank you National Party.

I'm against raising the retirement age for two reasons. The first is the sheer audacity of baby boomers and their outrageous intergenerational theft. Like a bloated swarm of locusts, baby boomers have benefitted from free education and social services that allowed them a free ride to property speculate Gen Xers and Gen Y out of their first home, and now these greedy boomers want to lift the retirement age just as they qualify? So Gen Xers and Gen Y have to pay for their education, pay for their kiwi saver and try to save for a deposit in another inflating property bubble while being told that they will have a longer working life as well?

What kind of sick joke is this? How come the original youth generation have sold out their early idealism for such selfish indulgence?

The second reason I'm against raising the retirement age is because raising the retirement age is anti Maori and anti worker. The average life expectancy of a wealthy pakeha comfortably sitting behind a desk may be 79, but for Maori men it's a mere 70 years and for the poor their life expectancy is only 73 years of age. Arn't these blokes the very ones who should be allowed to benefit most from a hard life of work?

Haven't they earned their retirement?

Raising the retirement age cheats Maori and the poor while giving those greedy baby boomers another free ride. Let's keep the age exactly where it is and asset test those boomers so they can finally start giving something back from the society they have so willingly taken from.

Assange and the reputation of the Swedish legal system ...

It took a long time but the conclusion was inevitable. Julian Assange is to be extradited to Sweden, facing allegations of sexual crimes, if the latest attempt by his legal team does not produce a?surprise. The U.K. Supreme Court?s decision is the only possible result of the long extradition process in the Assange case. The alternative, to reject the European Arrest Warrant issued by Swedish authorities, would have been a sign of distrust towards the Swedish legal system. Such a distrust would have been unreasonable.

Let me be very clear here. Sweden is a Rechtstaat. That doesn?t mean that Swedish legal institutions are infallible. No legal system is perfect. But if we look at the bigger picture, Sweden as a legal system is characterized by respect for justice, and for the rule of law. The Swedish court system?is characterized by foreseeability, high quality, fairness and humanism. These are facts. Yet I know already this characterization may cause many readers to shake their heads in disbelief. This description fits poorly with the picture of the Swedish legal system that has dominated the debate since the allegations against Assange became known. On the contrary, the picture of Sweden?s legal system is that of lack of justice and corruption. This discrepancy between facts and image is a problem.

The problem for the state of Sweden is that the image of our legal system, as it has been portrayed by Assange?s team and its supporters, is deeply distorted. It?s a caricature. When influential people ? such?as filmmaker Michael Moore, feminist Naomi Wolff, journalist John Pilger and many, many others ? launches attacks on the Swedish legal system against this caricature rather than facts it affects Sweden?s democratic reputation.

In many parts of the world the impression of Swedish law is today that spread by the Assange?s legal team. It is this side of the story that has dominated in the case so far, as representatives of the Swedish legal system and other Swedish legal experts have failed to provide a more accurate picture.

When I travel to other countries and meet lawyers interested in the Assange case (and they are many), I get asked the most incredible questions about my country?s legal system. Is it true that men are convicted of rape in Sweden on the sole basis of a woman?s allegations? Is it rape in Sweden when a condom breaks? Is it correct that Swedish judges contact the Justice Department before passing judgment in politically sensitive cases? Has the Swedish Prosecutor General had meetings with representatives of the American Embassy before the European Arrest Warrant in the Assange case was issued? Are judges in Swedish courts politically elected? Is it true that official Sweden is impregnated by feminist ideology and that Swedish public servants are taught that women never lie? Will the Swedish police put Assange directly on a plane to Guantanamo if he is sent here?

All of these issues reflect misconceptions about the Swedish legal system. The answer to every question is basically ?no?, even if a couple of the questions contain half-truths. Let me return to these later on. Before that, there is reason to recall what actually happened.

Assange, as a spokesperson for Wikileaks, came to Sweden 2010. Ironically, one of the reasons for the visit was the good reputation of Swedish law; Assange was here to investigate whether Wikileaks could benefit from the unique protection of information under our special constitutional laws of freedom of speech. During his stay in Sweden two events occurred, which led to the accusations against Assange for sexual assault of two women. Before Assange was interrogated, he left the country. He has since then refused to return to Sweden and it has taken almost two years to bring the issue of extradition finally decided by the English courts.

The decision by the Supreme Court means only that Assange will be transferred to Sweden for interrogation. It does not mean that Assange will be tried, or even prosecuted. It is entirely possible that the he is transferred to Sweden, questioned and then released if the Swedish authorities find that there are not sufficient grounds for prosecution. It is today impossible to assess how the case will unfold.

However, what we do know today is that Assange will receive fair treatment by the Swedish judicial system. Its legal institutions respect the rule of law. And yes, this also holds in cases of accusations of sexual offenses, where the Swedish Supreme Court as recently as a few years ago clearly pointed to the same high standard of proof applies in cases of suspected rape as with other crimes.

The other parts of the criticism against the Swedish legal system are largely based on myths and misconceptions. The Swedish criminal law framework with regard to sexual offenses is not different from most others. I will not be sentenced for rape if my condom breaks during a sexual act. However, I can be convicted of rape if I have sex with a sleeping or unconscious person, like in many other countries. The image of a bizarre Swedish criminal law in the area of sexual offences is false.

The Swedish judges who may judge Assange if he is brought to trial will not take orders from any government agencies, and will not be influenced by pressure from elsewhere. (The corruption level in the Swedish judiciary is extremely low.) We do have politically appointed lay persons as judges (similar to jurors) ? which I am skeptical against ? but they do not act as politicians in their judicial function and studies suggest that their political beliefs do not influence their judgments at all. And ? no ? Assange will not be placed on a CIA-chartered plane by the Swedish police as soon as he arrives at Stockholm airport Arlanda.

While showing the presenter a picture he'd taken with the AR glasses, he revealed that the prototype is controlled with a trackpad running down the right* arm. He also talked about the device's genesis in Goggle's X Lab, which he described as an "advanced skunkworks" where "far-out projects" are developed -- it's also the department that occupies most of his time. While the units he and his colleagues have been wearing are very rough prototypes, the Google co-founder shared his private hope that the tech will make its way to general release next year. You can catch the extract in full in the video after the break.

*Right for the wearer, left for the observer. It depends entirely on your perspective.

Fearing a financial rupture in Europe, investors around the world fled from risk Wednesday. They punished stocks and the euro, and the yield on a benchmark U.S. bond hit its lowest point since World War II.

In the United States, where concerns about Europe have already wiped out most of this year's gains for stocks, major averages fell more than 1 percent. The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 161 points.

With Spain's banking system teetering and Greece's political future unclear ahead of crucial elections next month, European stocks lost even more. The euro dropped below $1.24, to its lowest point since the summer of 2010.

"Everyone's just afraid that if Europe doesn't get its act together, there will be a big spillover in the U.S.," said Peter Tchir, manager of the hedge fund TF Market Advisors.

He said the uncertainty over Europe's future was reminiscent of the financial crisis in the fall of 2008, when it was briefly unclear whether banks would be bailed out and "we had these giant swings up and down."

Wall Street, which woke up to increased anxiety over higher Spanish borrowing rates, was down from the opening bell.

The Dow closed down 160.83 points, or 1.3 percent, at 12,419.86. The Dow has had a miserable May, losing more than 6 percent, and is on track for its first losing month since September.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 19.10 points to 1,313.32. The Nasdaq composite index fell 33.63 to 2,837.36. Energy stocks were hit hardest because of a big drop in the price of oil, but stocks in all major industries fell.

The trigger for Wednesday's sell-off was Spain, where the banking system is under strain a week after its fourth-largest bank required $23.8 billion in government aid to cover souring real estate loans.

Investors are increasingly worried that problems at the bank, Bankia, might recur at other Spanish banks. Many lent heavily during the nation's real estate bubble. Losses from the real estate crash might be too big for Spain's government to shoulder.

Spain has enacted harsh government spending cuts to bring its budget deficit within strict new European guidelines. But the country is in a recession, has 25 percent unemployment and might need a bailout, like Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

On Wednesday, borrowing rates rose sharply for Spain and Italy, which are seen as the next problem cases in a debt crisis that has rocked global markets for more than two years. Traders dumped bonds issued by those governments.

The yield on Spain's 10-year bonds, a key indicator of market confidence in the country's ability to pay down its debt, shot as high as 6.69 percent, the highest since the euro currency was launched in 2002.

Intense demand for low-risk, easily tradable securities led investors to buy U.S. government debt. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note plunged to 1.61 percent from 1.74 percent late Tuesday.

Wednesday's yield appeared to be the lowest since 1945, said Bill O'Donnell, head of U.S. Treasury strategy at the Royal Bank of Scotland, citing data from the European Central Bank and other sources.

Federal Reserve daily records only go back to 1962, and those reflect a previous record of 1.70 percent, set May 17.

"There's just a massive flight to safe-haven assets today," O'Donnell said.

He characterized the rush into U.S. bonds by citing a well-known, unsavory analogy made by Richard Fisher, the head of the Federal Reserve's Dallas bank: "The U.S. is the prettiest horse in the glue factory."

Yields on German government bonds, also seen as safe, turned lower.

Concern about Europe lurked around every corner: The European Commission said consumer confidence fell sharply across the region last month. Spaniards withdrew money from their banks, spreading fear about the Spanish government's ability to go on without itself being bailed out. Spain's main stock index closed down 2.6 percent.

An opinion poll in Greece showed that the far-left Syriza party is gaining support ahead of elections June 17. Syriza opposes the system of bailouts and sharp budget cuts that have kept Greece afloat but also gutted its economy.

If the party wins, Greece may be forced to exit the euro currency. The shock waves could reach nations that have received bailouts, like Portugal, and those that might need them, like Italy.

Until the Greek elections next month, things will be too uncertain for the U.S. market to sustain a meaningful rally, said David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds.

If Greece's leaders allow the bailouts to continue and European governments start spending to spur growth, Kelly expects the market eventually to rise. If Syriza wins and Greece is expelled from the euro, he expects a volatile market for months.

Amid the tumult, Europe's executive branch called on the 17 countries that use the currency to create a "banking union" that can centrally oversee and, if needed, bail out national banks.

If Europe's financial crisis plunges it into a deep recession, global economic growth will likely falter, reducing demand for commodities and machines that power growth.

Fearing that outcome, traders pushed the stocks of heavy equipment maker Caterpillar and aluminum company Alcoa to among the biggest declines of the 30 companies that make up the Dow.

The euro fell as low as $1.2360, the lowest since the summer of 2010. Benchmark stock indexes closed down 2.2 percent in France, 1.8 percent in Italy and Germany.

When banks and big investors get frightened, they sell stocks or bonds and park the money in the safest government debt markets. They buy Japanese yen, German bonds and especially U.S. Treasurys.

Such purchases are not about turning a profit, said O'Donnell of RBS. That's why German government two-year notes are paying zero percent: People are simply handing their money over for safekeeping.

The U.S. Treasury market is still considered one of the safest places in the world to stash billions in a hurry. At $11 trillion, no other market is as large, so there's always somebody ready to buy or sell them.

"When people just want to get their money back, there's not a lot of competition," O'Donnell said.

Food and energy commodities fell sharply. Crude oil lost more than $3 to below $88 a barrel. Crude has been falling steadily since the beginning of May, when it traded as high as $106 a barrel.

Kelly, of J.P. Morgan Funds, said investors should remember that the U.S. is on firmer economic footing than Europe, and make sure their portfolios could withstand either possible outcome.

"Things could be much better, or much worse, than the markets have priced in," Kelly said. "The only logical investment strategy is to be balanced ? to get to the middle of the boat."

Among U.S. stocks making moves:

? Monsanto, the agricultural company, was one of the few big gainers in a sea of red. It jumped 2.2 percent after its CEO said this year's earnings will likely surge 25 percent, far more than Wall Street had been expecting. Sales were strong in its seed and chemicals business, including Roundup herbicides.

? Research in Motion, maker of the BlackBerry, plunged 7.1 percent after the company said late Tuesday it had hired a team of bankers to help it weigh its options ? Wall Street jargon for a possible sale or reorganization. RIM's business has been crumbling as smartphone users move to iPhone and Android devices.

Here?s Johnny! SkySQL Raises Another $2.5M To Give Oracle Nightmares

200px-The_shining_heres_johnnySkySQL plans to be something of a thorn in Oracle's side. As you'll recall MySQL, which as a free database platform annoyed Oracle, was sold to Sun and then Oracle bought Sun. That was supposed to keep a lid on things. Now with MySQL under its wing, Oracle plans to move those MySQL users over to Oracle databases in due course. But it can't push things too hard due to EU competition rules in place for the next five years. So guess what? That gives SkySQL - backed previously by the former founders of MySQL - a window to come back and start re-supporting all those dedicated die-hard Sun/MySQL fans. They're baaack?.. And to do it they've raised an additional ?2 million in Series A funding from California Technology Ventures, LLC (CTV). This takes SkySQL's war chest to ?6 million and will mean they can expand their business supporting existing MySQL users.

Russian firm: Iran victim of another cyberattack

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A Russian-based internet security firm says a powerful computer virus with unprecedented data-snatching capabilities has attacked machines in Iran and elsewhere in the Middle East.

Iran has not disclosed any damage done by the new spyware virus, dubbed "Flame." Its origin has not been identified, but Israel's vice premier fueled speculation that his country, known for its technological innovation and tireless campaign against Iran's suspect nuclear program, unleashed it.

Russian digital security provider Kaspersky Lab, which identified the virus, said in a release posted on its website late Monday that "the complexity and functionality of the newly discovered malicious program exceed those of all other cyber menaces known to date."

It said preliminary findings suggest the virus has been active since March 2010, but eluded detection because of its "extreme complexity" and the fact that only selected computers are being targeted. Flame's primary purpose, it said, "appears to be cyber espionage, by stealing information from infected machines" and sending it to servers across the world.

According to Kaspersky, the virus collected information not only in Iran, but also in Israel and the Palestinian territories, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Iran, however, was far and away the country most affected, it said.

A unit of the Iranian communications and information technology ministry said only that it has produced an antivirus capable of identifying and removing the new malware. The Flame virus is the fourth known cyber attack on Iranian computer systems.

Comments Tuesday by Israel's vice premier did little to deflect suspicion about possible Israeli involvement in the latest attack.

"Whoever sees the Iranian threat as a significant threat is likely to take various steps, including these, to hobble it," Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio. "Israel is blessed with high technology, and we boast tools that open all sorts of opportunities for us."

Israel, like the West, rejects Tehran's claims that its nuclear program is designed to produce energy, not bombs. It considers Iran to be the greatest threat to its survival and repeatedly, if obliquely, threatened to attack Iran's nuclear facilities if Tehran doesn't abandon its uranium enrichment project, a key element of bomb making.

Because Flame is so complex, was not designed to hack into bank accounts and doesn't have the hallmarks of amateur hackers, Kaspersky has concluded that the research that went into the code was government-sponsored.

The code offers no information that can tie Flame to any specific country, Kaspersky said in its release, but a company agent in Israel said "you could more or less put your finger on any Western nation."

There is no indication of what kind of material it stole, but "we know that the computers that were infected were computers with very sensitive information" because the virus can be modified to mine whatever information is sought, added Ilan Froimovici, technical director at Power Communications, Kaspersky's representative in Israel.

Evidence suggests the same programmers were behind both Flame and Stuxnet, a virus that disrupted controls of some nuclear centrifuges in Iran in 2010, Froimovici said. The centrifuges are devices used in enriching uranium.

The two codes "use the same vulnerabilities in the operating system and the computer infrastructure in order to infect the computer system. We do believe that the same programmers built the two codes," he said.

Udi Mokady, CEO of Cyber-Ark, an Israeli developer of information security, said he thought four countries, in no particular order, have the technological know-how to develop so sophisticated a cyber offensive: Israel, the U.S., China and Russia.

"It was 20 times more sophisticated than Stuxnet," with thousands of lines of code that took a large team, ample funding and months, if not years, to develop, he said.

"It's a live program that communicates back to its master. It asks, where should I go? What should I do now? It's really almost like a science fiction movie."

Iran claims Stuxnet and other computer viruses have done no serious harm to Iran's nuclear or industrial facilities, and sees them as part of a campaign by Israel, the U.S. and their allies, which includes the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists, to undermine the Iranian nuclear program.

Kaspersky said the cyber espionage worm came to its attention after the United Nations' International Telecommunication Union asked it for help in finding a piece of malware that was deleting sensitive information across the Middle East. The company stumbled across Flame when searching for that other code, it said.

The discovery of the Flame virus comes just days after talks between Iran and six world powers in Baghdad failed to persuade Tehran to freeze enrichment. A new round of nuclear talks is expected to take place in Moscow next month.

Yaalon, the Israeli vice premier, told Army Radio on Tuesday that the talks in Iraq "yielded no significant achievement" except to let Iran buy time. He appeared to take a swipe at President Barack Obama by saying it might "even be in the interest of some players in the West to play for time."

Yaalon in the past expressed disappointment that the U.S. has delayed plans to expand sanctions against Iran, suggesting Washington was afraid the penalties would send oil prices soaring and hurt Obama's re-election chances.

Chrome OS review (version 19)

Image

It seems like yesterday that we reviewed the inaugural Samsung Series 5 Chromebook running Google's Chrome OS, an operating system for laptops based on Chrome. It was, from the start, a world in which everything from music playback to document creation happened in browser tabs. Since we last checked in a year ago, Google has addressed some early complaints -- the browser can actually stream Netflix now! -- but it's only just getting around to ticking off some other long-standing grievances, like multitasking.

The company just announced two new Chrome OS devices -- the Samsung Chromebook Series 5 550 and Chromebox Series 3 -- and both run a spanking-new build of the OS that ushers in a simplified desktop with customizable wallpaper and the ability to minimize, maximize and close windows -- oh my! More importantly, you can now view multiple windows onscreen, edit docs offline and pin shortcuts to the bottom of the screen -- a combination that promises some seriously improved multitasking. Other goodies: built-in Google Music, Google+ and Hangouts, along with a basic photo editor, redesigned music player and enhanced remote desktop app. So does all this add up to an upgrade meaty enough to make the skeptics give Chrome OS a second look? Could it be time for you to get the low-tech person in your life a Chromebook? Let's see.

Send-Off Dog Training As opposed to a Dog Puppy obedience ...

Send-Off' proper dog training has been around for a very long time. Its origins are based around mostly training hen dogs. These dogs would be sent off and away to the coaches kennel, in which the trainer would teach the particular dogs the way to do retrieval and basic field operate. Most of these pet dogs were by no means house dogs and cats, and lived with other pet dogs near the favored hunting places, only to be utilized a few times annually. 'Send-Off' training developed to the point of instruction house dogs and cats as well. The idea is that you take your canine to the coaches facility, and then leave them generally there for a given time. This is normally a few weeks to a couple a few months depending on what is needed to be carried out and the difficulty of the dog getting trained. During this time there is little for you to no make contact with between the owner and the puppy, until the instruction is completed. Your pet dog obedience training video clip is a distinct approach completely. Instead of having someone else do all the work, the idea puts the job of training your new puppy on it's owners neck. There is no separating between puppy and owner when using your pet dog obedience training video clip. No need to generate to another state to drop off or grab your dog, in fact no need to generate at all. This brand of training can be done in your own home at your own speed.

The largest advantage of 'Send-Off' Training can be its biggest disadvantage. 'Send-Off' instruction has another person do the genuine work of training the dog with the idea that when the dog is actually trained it will be an easy hands off of handle to the pet owner. However pet dogs are intelligent enough to understand when one person does something more important than somebody else. With the owner almost completely eliminated from the equation involving establishing popularity and authority, it is difficult for the owner to be able and experienced in the techniques and also applications of behavior. The dog tends to realize this specific more week by week until eventually they will listen even worse than they actually did ahead of. A dog puppy obedience training video sets you in charge by instructing you on directly the way to train your canine, and you since the owner develop a strong scenario that you are in control. And since anyone built that will bridge oneself, its easier to see in the event it needs maintenance and you know how to rebuild the idea. All instruction done through your pet dog obedience training video clip is done in the house. No training in a 'Send-Off' instruction is actually done in the house. You need your canine to obey you at your house, not within the trainers! Aside from the critical downside of using dog owner from the training situation, 'Send-Off' training isn't cheap. It may range from hundreds of to several thousand dollars. Your pet dog obedience training video clip costs a fraction of what 'Send-Off' instruction costs, there are many available for under $50 us dollars.

As a expert trainer I see and support teach numerous owners whom sent their own dogs away to get trained and ended up very disappointed within a few months of getting it. The most notable scenario was an amazing Schutzhund 3 German Shepherd Dog guy that recognized all the commands. It also recognized that its owner did not know anything at all. The man expended over ten thousand dollars for this trained puppy that was pointless to your ex because he did not know what he was undertaking. So he had to add my own fee on top of everything he had already expended. A good puppy obedience training video clip might not support everyone, but I would completely recommend the idea over a 'Send-Off' training course. If you browse around you can find a few that have pleasure guaranteed extended warranties which make all of them practically without risk. If a puppy obedience training video clip does not help you, my subsequent advice should be to hire an In-Home dog trainer to help you out since they also starting their training in your home and can be generally there to tell anyone when you are doing something wrong. Not even the most effective video can let you know that.

Scientists identify new HIV-inhibiting protein

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

Scientists have identified a new HIV-suppressing protein in the blood of people infected with the virus. In laboratory studies, the protein, called CXCL4 or PF-4, binds to HIV such that it cannot attach to or enter a human cell. The research was led by Paolo Lusso, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the Section of Viral Pathogenesis in the Laboratory of Immunoregulation at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of NIH.

CXCL4 belongs to a family of molecules called chemokines that help regulate the movement of immune cells around the body. In the mid-1990s, four chemokines?three discovered by Dr. Lusso, Robert Gallo, M.D., and their colleagues?were found in laboratory experiments to function as HIV inhibitors. These chemokines as well as CXCL4 may regulate the level of virus replication in infected individuals and thus the pace at which HIV disease progresses.

According to Dr. Lusso, the site where CXCL4 binds to the outer coat of HIV seems to be different from other known vulnerable sites targeted by HIV-blocking antibodies and drugs. His team is working with scientists at the NIAID Vaccine Research Center to define the atomic-level crystal structure of this binding site, which potentially may play a role in the future development of HIV treatments or vaccines.

CXCL4 differs from the other four major HIV-suppressive chemokines in several respects. The other four chemokines inhibit HIV infection by binding to either one of two cell receptors?called CCR5 and CXCR4?used by the virus to attach to and enter immune cells, whereas CXCL4 binds directly to the outer surface of the virus. While the other chemokines bind to forms of HIV that use either the CCR5 or the CXCR4 receptor, CXCL4 can bind to and block infection by a wide variety of HIV strains, no matter what their receptor specificity. Finally, while the other chemokines are made primarily by immune cells, CXCL4 is made by platelets, the blood cells involved in clotting.

Dr. Lusso and his colleagues are pursuing further research to better understand CXCL4's role in HIV disease and to determine whether the chemokine has a protective effect not only in laboratory studies, but also in people.

'War criminal': UK ex-PM Blair heckled while testifying

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was accused of being "a war criminal" by a heckler who burst into a courtroom as he testified at an U.K. inquiry into media ethics on Monday.

By NBC News' Baruch Ben-Chorin and msnbc.com's Alastair Jamieson

Updated at 10:49 a.m. ET: LONDON - Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was accused of being "a war criminal" by a heckler who burst into a courtroom as he testifed at an U.K. inquiry into media ethics on Monday.?

The protester, who gave his name as?David Lawley-Wakelin,?shouted?that Blair?should be arrested -- but only seconds later he was?bundled away by security staff.

He yelled at Blair, who is a?$2.5-million-a-year adviser to U.S. investment bank JP Morgan:?"This man should be arrested for war crimes. JP Morgan paid him off for the Iraq war, three months after he invaded Iraq."?

In response to the outburst, Blair said: "Can I just say on the record what he said about Iraq and JP Morgan is completely and totally untrue. I have never had a?discussion with them about that."

Lawley-Wakelin describes himself online as?a documentary film-maker working on a project called the "The Alternative Iraq Enquiry", for which he has traveled to Iraq.

ITV News reported he was being questioned by police, but later released.

Sky News reported that an investigation was immediately launched into how he entered the secure area of the court - an embarrassing breach of security less than a year after Rupert Murdoch was hit by a custard pie at a inquiry into the same subject at Britain's parliament.

Prior to the interruption, Blair was facing questions about his relationship with Murdoch.

Blair, who served as prime minister between 1997 and 2007, was the latest senior politician?to appear?at the investigation set up last year in the wake of a phone-hacking scandal when it emerged that reporters at the Murdoch-owned News of the World tabloid had routinely hacked into the phones of public figures. Other witnesses have included actor Hugh Grant, as well as Murdoch and his son James.

More coverage from Britain's ITV News

Blair is godfather to one of the powerful News Corp. chairman and CEO.'s children.

Ordered by Prime Minister David Cameron, the inquiry has tarnished Britain's elite by laying bare the collusion between politicians, the police and the media.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair testified this morning about his close ties to media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who's News of the World tabloid is in the middle of a phone-hacking scandal. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

While Blair is no longer active in British politics, the inquiry may still prove uncomfortable as it examines issues such as his decision after stepping down as prime minister to become a godfather to Murdoch's daughter Grace at a ceremony on the banks of the River Jordan.

"Blair led the way in having no shame about courting Murdoch," said Ivor Gaber, professor of political journalism at City University. "He set the style and the standard and if you regard Cameron as the 'heir to Blair' then it's not exactly surprising that he followed suit."

The BBC reported that, giving evidence earlier in May, one of Mr Blair's former Cabinet ministers told the inquiry he felt the relationship had "arguably" become "closer than wise".

Murdoch told the inquiry last month that he had never asked a prime minister for anything.

Blair set the tone for his relationship with Britain's press when he flew to Australia in 1995 to speak before a gathering of Murdoch's executives who had previously used their British tabloids to vilify his Labour Party predecessors.

'Into the lion's den'
The decision infuriated much of his left-of-center party who saw the Australian-born tycoon as a right-winger who had helped to keep them out of power for years.

"People would be horrified," Blair said later in his autobiography. "On the other hand ... not to go was to say 'carry on and do your worst,' and we knew their worst was very bad indeed."

Former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks and her husband, Charlie Brooks, have been charged with perverting the course of justice during the U.K. phone hacking scandal. ITV's Keir Simmons reports.

"The country's most powerful newspaper proprietor, whose publications have hitherto been rancorous in their opposition to the Labour party, invites us into the lion's den. You go, don't you?"

With the backing of Murdoch's top-selling Sun tabloid, Blair swept to power in 1997 and again in 2001 and 2005. But with an ever-increasing reputation for public relations "spin", he started to face questions over his sincerity.

"Tony Blair quickly became famous in Fleet Street for inviting in one group of newspaper people and telling them how skeptical he was about Europe; and then inviting in another lot and telling them how keen he was on Europe," Andrew Marr, a senior BBC journalist, told the inquiry.

May 1: Rupert and James Murdoch are severely criticized after investigations into phone-hacking allegations - and three of their senior executives are accused of misleading parliament. ITN's Juliet Bremner reports.?

"But the different groups compared notes, and his reputation was not hugely enhanced."

Much of that came to a head when Blair and then President George W. Bush agreed to invade Iraq, going against the public opinion in Britain.

Blair is likely to be asked why he spoke to Murdoch three times in the days leading up to the Iraq war and whether this had any impact on the fact that all Murdoch's papers supported the unpopular invasion.

Rupert Murdoch returned to the Leveson Inquiry to give evidence for a second day. ITV's Paul Davis reports.

He will also be asked whether his reliance on Britain's press meant that he did not properly scrutinize their role in society and whether any group, such as Murdoch's UK arm, News International, had too much control of the market.

"There was a desperation to get the Sun onside and to get News International on side, basically at all costs," Liverpool University's political professor Jonathan Tonge, told Reuters. "And if that meant sacrificing a serious analysis of the relationship and the health of the relationship, then so be it."?
