Video Game Review: New Super Mario Bros. 2 | Toledo Newspaper

New Super Mario Bros. 2 (Nintendo)

This always dynamic platform game builds on familiar formats and events involving Mario and Luigi rescuing the princess from Bowser while expanding the coin collecting elements, which add entertainment, replay value, and fun new scenarios like using flower fireballs to transform enemies into currency.

This well balanced all ages, Nintendo 3DS exclusive game features engaging level designs that utilize both screens while allowing more vertical movement. Glowing lava, windy sand, and other environmental add deeper gameplay elements. The graphics feature an average showcase of the 3D visuals, which shade out the background out a little and sharpens the gameplay elements.

The main modes are single, co-op (multiplayer) and coin rush. Both players must have a game copy for the impressive co-op mode. The only real improvement needed here is camera views focusing in between both players instead of tracking only one. Players also miss out on online competitions against a worldwide player cache though StreetPass options still allow player challenges and score sharing.

The coin rush mode challenges players to grab all the loot they can within a time limit. Each game mode offers different strategies while coin collecting contributes to an overall counter as well as totals for each game session.

Strong sound, immense secrets/collectibles, special suits, new items (e.g. protective ?block head? head gear), surprises (e.g. sixth world stage), and upcoming downloadable course packs (from in-game store) strengthen the overall game and replay value even more. New Super Mario Bros. 2 is available for purchase in stores (physical copy) or the Nintendo eShop (downloadable copy). A highly recommended pick-up-and-play handheld gaming experience (***1/2, rated E for mild carton violence).
